It seems to me like electronic traction control would cut in far faster and earlier, preventing the mechanical G80 from locking. Even if the G80 locked, one or both front wheels on a 4WD could still be spinning, thus engaging traction control again.

The Gov-lock that you linked to is a bit misunderstood. It is basically an on-demand locker that uses a light coil that mechanically signals the clutches to lock up.

The ramping continues until both axles - and therefore both wheels - are spinning at the same speed. This is full lock, and it prevents any further wheel slip.
