On 6th March 2012 Niger’s Council of Ministers decreed the formal establishment of the Termit & Tin Toumma National Nature Reserve. At 97,000km² the reserve is the largest terrestrial protected area in Africa. Niger's protected areas comprise about 7.7 percent of the total land area. Six of the reserves are fully categorized under the IUCN.
